A man in his 30s tragically lost his life in a motor vehicle accident in Nasinu early this morning. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the incident occurred near the Nasinu road junction shortly after 3am.
The victim was driving toward Suva when a colliding vehicle, also driven by a man in his 30s heading in the opposite direction, crashed into his car. Emergency responders rushed the victim to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, but he was sadly declared dead upon arrival.
Authorities have launched an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the crash. SSP Divuana emphasized the importance of road safety, urging all drivers to remain vigilant. He noted that despite ongoing reminders from road safety stakeholders about safe driving practices, many motorists appear to disregard these warnings.
“Complacency can lead to accidents, sometimes resulting in the tragic loss of life. We call on all road users to adopt a change of mindset to ensure their safety; observing road rules is crucial for enjoying a secure festive season,” he added.
Encouragingly, the current road death toll stands at 46, a significant reduction compared to 68 fatalities recorded during the same period last year, highlighting that ongoing efforts toward road safety may be making a positive impact.
In light of this tragic incident, it’s a sobering reminder of the importance of responsible driving. With continued awareness and commitment to road safety, we can work together to prevent such occurrences and promote a safer driving environment for all.
