A tragic motor vehicle accident occurred early this morning in Nasinu, resulting in the death of a man in his 30s. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the incident took place around 3 AM near the Nasinu road junction.
The victim was traveling toward Suva when his vehicle collided head-on with another car driven by a man of similar age heading in the opposite direction. Emergency services rushed the victim to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, but he was unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival.
As investigations into the circumstances of the crash continue, the Director of Traffic has urged drivers to remain vigilant on the roads. SSP Divuana emphasized the importance of road safety and the need for all road users to adhere strictly to traffic rules. He noted that despite ongoing reminders from road safety stakeholders, many drivers seem to disregard these advisories, which can lead to complacency and tragic outcomes.
Currently, the road death toll stands at 46 for the year, a decrease from 68 during the same period last year, offering a glimmer of hope that safety campaigns may be making an impact.
This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the critical need for heightened road safety awareness. As the festive season approaches, it is an opportunity for all road users to reflect on their behavior and commit to safer driving practices, ensuring a more secure environment for everyone on the road.
