The guardian of a 16-year-old boy who lost his life in a tragic car accident in Labasa is searching for answers regarding the circumstances surrounding his death. Premila Devi, who has raised Shalvin Lal since he was just seven years old following his father’s passing, shared her heart-wrenching experience of the last moments they spent together.

On the night of the accident, Shalvin had returned home after a swim, laughing and joking to avoid raising any suspicions about his plans. After a family dinner, he took a short nap but later mentioned that he intended to go out for a while until his uncle returned from Savusavu. Tragically, at 2 AM, Premila received a phone call notifying her that Shalvin had been involved in a fatal car crash in Naduna.

Premila expressed disbelief that Shalvin could have been driving, given that he suffered from a physical disability affecting his mobility. She emphasized that he did not possess a driver’s license, nor had he ever driven a car. Reports indicate Shalvin had sustained only minor injuries, leaving the family in shock and confusion regarding the accident.

The Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, noted that the investigation would look into how Shalvin managed to drive without a license and the events leading up to the crash. Currently, the road death toll is 57, a decrease from 74 during the same period last year, indicating an overall improvement in road safety, albeit with tragic incidents like this emphasizing ongoing concerns.

While this incident is undeniably tragic, it may serve as a reminder to assess and address issues related to road safety, driver licensing, and the support systems in place for young individuals with disabilities. Such discussions can pave the way for beneficial reforms that prioritize safety and community awareness. Such tragedies also spark important conversations around the protection and support offered to families facing similar circumstances, highlighting the need for empathy and social support networks.
