Two tragic accidents were reported yesterday morning in the Western Division, resulting in fatalities and serious injuries. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana noted that both incidents took place in Lautoka during the early hours.

The first accident occurred just after midnight when a 38-year-old man lost control of his vehicle while driving along Barara flat towards Nadi. The car veered off the road, leading to the man’s hospitalization along with three other passengers. While he sadly succumbed to his injuries at Lautoka Hospital, two of the passengers are currently in stable condition, and one has been discharged.

The second incident, which appears to be a hit-and-run, transpired around 3 AM on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby and was quickly transported to Lautoka Hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Police are actively investigating to determine the vehicle involved.

In a separate accident reported this morning in Wailada, Lami, a 22-year-old individual sustained serious injuries after crashing into a trailer attached to a parked truck. He was taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he remains under medical care.

Despite the unfortunate events, it’s worth noting that the current road death toll stands at 50, which shows a decline compared to 71 fatalities during the same period last year. This suggests ongoing efforts to enhance road safety measures may be having a positive impact.

As investigations are ongoing into both accidents, the authorities encourage all drivers to remain vigilant on the roads to prevent further tragedies. Together, the community can work towards fostering a safer driving environment for everyone.
