Tragedy struck Lautoka yesterday morning with two separate fatal accidents. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana reported that both incidents unfolded in the early hours.

The first accident, which happened shortly after midnight, resulted in the death of a 38-year-old man. It is alleged that while driving on Barara Flat towards Nadi, the driver lost control of his vehicle, causing it to drift off the road. Although he was rushed to Lautoka Hospital along with three passengers, the man succumbed to his injuries. Currently, two of the passengers are stable in the hospital, while the third has been discharged.

SSP Divuana also detailed a second incident, suspected to be a hit and run, which occurred around 3 am on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby who promptly took him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival. Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident to identify the vehicle and driver involved.

In comparison to last year, the road death toll has seen a decline, currently standing at 50 fatalities, down from 71 during the same timeframe. This suggests ongoing efforts in road safety, although these recent tragedies remind us of the importance of vigilance and care while driving.

In light of these events, it is crucial for community members to prioritize road safety and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life. The marked decrease in fatalities provides a sliver of hope that initiatives aimed at improving road safety are beginning to have an impact.
