Two tragic accidents took place in Lautoka yesterday morning, resulting in the loss of life. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic, reported that both incidents occurred in the early hours.

The first accident happened shortly after midnight, claiming the life of a 38-year-old man. It is alleged that the driver lost control of his vehicle while traveling along Barara Flat towards Nadi, causing it to veer off the road. The individual, along with three passengers, was transported to Lautoka Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Currently, two of the passengers are in stable condition while another has been discharged.

The second incident, described as a hit-and-run, occurred around 3 a.m. on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was found by a passerby and rushed to Lautoka Hospital, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana noted that traffic investigators are actively working to gather information about the vehicle involved in this tragic event.

Despite these incidents, it is worth noting that the overall road death toll this year stands at 50, a reduction compared to 71 fatalities during the same period last year. This decline in road fatalities suggests that ongoing safety measures and public awareness campaigns may be having a positive impact.

As the community mourns these losses, the hope remains that continued efforts in traffic safety can prevent such tragedies in the future.
