Two tragic accidents occurred early yesterday morning in the Western Division, resulting in the loss of two lives. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, both incidents took place in Lautoka.
The first accident happened shortly after midnight, claiming the life of a 38-year-old man. It is reported that the man lost control of his vehicle while driving along Barara Flat toward Nadi, causing it to veer off the road. He was transported to Lautoka Hospital along with three passengers, but unfortunately, he passed away later. Two passengers remain in stable condition, while the third has already been discharged.
The second incident, which is suspected to be a hit-and-run, occurred around 3 AM on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was found by a passerby and was rushed to Lautoka Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana indicated that traffic investigators are working diligently to identify the vehicle involved in this incident.
In another separate accident in Wailada, Lami, a 22-year-old sustained serious injuries when his vehicle collided with a stationary truck’s trailer. He is currently hospitalized at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
In light of these recent tragedies, it is noteworthy that the current road death toll stands at 50, a decrease from 71 fatalities during the same period last year. This statistic brings a glimmer of hope as it suggests that efforts to improve road safety may be having a positive impact.
As investigations continue into these tragic incidents, it’s essential for the community to heed road safety warnings and remain vigilant while driving to prevent such occurrences in the future.
