Two tragic accidents occurred yesterday morning in Lautoka, resulting in the loss of lives. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, both incidents took place in the early hours.
The first incident happened shortly after midnight, claiming the life of a 38-year-old man. Reports indicate that he lost control of his vehicle while driving along Barara Flat toward Nadi, causing it to veer off the road. He and three passengers were promptly taken to Lautoka Hospital; however, the driver succumbed to his injuries there. Fortunately, two passengers remain in stable condition while the third has been discharged.
The second accident, which is suspected to be a hit-and-run, occurred around 3 am on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby who immediately took him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana noted that traffic investigators are currently working to gather details about the vehicle involved in this incident.
Despite these heart-wrenching events, it is worth noting that the overall road death toll this year stands at 50, a significant decrease from 71 fatalities at the same time last year. This may suggest that safety measures and awareness campaigns are having a positive impact on road safety in the region.
These incidents serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety measures and responsible driving. It’s crucial for all drivers and passengers to remain vigilant on the roads to prevent further tragedies.
