Two tragic accidents were reported yesterday morning in Lautoka, resulting in the loss of two lives. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic, confirmed that both incidents occurred in the early hours.
The first accident took place shortly after midnight and involved a 38-year-old man who lost control of his vehicle while driving on Barara Flat towards Nadi. The vehicle veered off the road, leading to the man’s hospitalization along with three other passengers. While two of the passengers remain in stable condition at Lautoka Hospital, one has since been discharged. Unfortunately, the driver succumbed to his injuries.
Shortly after, around 3 AM, a second accident occurred on Drasa Avenue and is being treated as a hit-and-run. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby and subsequently taken to Lautoka Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana noted that traffic investigators are actively working to identify the vehicle involved in this incident.
As it stands, the current road death toll has reached 50, which is a notable decrease compared to the 71 fatalities reported during the same period last year. This reduction in fatalities suggests that ongoing safety campaigns could be having a positive impact on road safety.
It is essential for both drivers and passengers to remain vigilant and adhere to safety regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future. While these incidents are heartbreaking, the focus on reducing road fatalities is a commendable effort that may save more lives in the years to come.
