A man has been found guilty of manslaughter in connection with a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of three individuals. Justice Sunil Sharma ruled against Paul Elijah Sorby, who was charged with three counts of manslaughter and two counts of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.
The case revealed that Sorby was under the influence of alcohol when he drove two passengers from Naidovi to Lomawai Village on April 20, 2018. During the journey, Sorby fell asleep at the wheel while driving on the Queens Highway near Batiri. His vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic, colliding forcefully with another car.
The collision claimed the lives of Manoa Devo, Lusiana Nawakatutu, and Titilia Vunawena, who were in the other vehicle. Additionally, Sorby’s passengers, Losalini Bainimua and Peni Kalinisei, suffered injuries and were hospitalized for a significant time.
At the scene, Sorby expressed his remorse to a responding officer, stating, “Officer, I am sorry, I just slept.” This admission was a critical element of the prosecution’s case, highlighting the severity of his actions while intoxicated.
Justice Sharma emphasized that the defense had failed to establish any reasonable doubt regarding Sorby’s culpability on all five counts. Sorby is set to receive his sentence next Wednesday.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by driving under the influence and the tragic consequences of reckless behavior. It brings attention to the need for increased awareness and prevention measures regarding road safety. As the community reflects on this heartbreaking incident, there is hope that it will lead to productive dialogues about responsible driving practices and the responsibilities each individual holds on the road.
