On New Year’s Day, the life of 11-year-old Roger Qoro was tragically cut short when he was thrown from a moving vehicle, leaving his family devastated. The talented young boy, who had dreams of becoming an aircraft engineer and playing rugby for the national team, died from injuries sustained after falling from the back of a carrier truck while traveling along Natadola with friends.

The accident happened when the vehicle hit a pothole, causing Roger to be ejected onto the road. Despite efforts to rush him to Sigatoka Hospital, his injuries were too severe, and he passed away, resulting in heartbreak for his father, Roger Qoro Sr. The father mourned the loss of his son’s ambitions, recalling how Roger often declared his future aspirations and expressed his desire to achieve great things.

Roger was an exceptional student and athlete, known for placing in the top rankings in his year group from Year 1 to Year 6, and excelling in various sports, including sprinting, where he earned medals. In a bittersweet memory, Mr. Qoro recounted their New Year’s Eve spent cleaning the yard together, emphasizing his son’s high energy and enthusiasm. Known affectionately as the “Nadi Golden Boy” by his coaches, Roger’s loss is deeply felt within his community, particularly as he was returning from a church picnic when the accident occurred.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, acknowledged the profound tragedy of the incident, emphasizing the importance of road safety and the role of drivers in preventing such accidents.
