The aspirations of 11-year-old Roger Qoro were tragically cut short on New Year’s Day when he lost his life after being thrown from a moving vehicle. The promising student, celebrated for his talent and ambitions, was involved in a heartbreaking incident that has left his family devastated.

Local authorities are currently probing the events leading up to this unfortunate accident, which took place while Roger was being transported in the back tray of a carrier truck along Natadola. It is believed that a sudden jolt from hitting a pothole caused him to be ejected from the vehicle, resulting in severe injuries when he landed on the road.

Roger, a Year 6 student, was amongst peers when the tragedy struck. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to Sigatoka Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

Describing the loss as a painful beginning to the year, Roger’s father, Roger Qoro Sr., shared his son’s dreams of becoming an aircraft engineer and playing rugby for the national team. His father recalled moments when Roger expressed his determination, saying, “One day, you’ll see me on TV,” highlighting his son’s drive and ambition.

Beyond sports, Roger was also an accomplished athlete, with hopes of an athletic tour to New Zealand and Australia. He was a renowned competitor, having won multiple awards, including a gold in the 4x100m relay and a silver medal in the Under-11 boys’ long jump. Academically, he consistently ranked among the top of his class and was anticipated to assume the role of deputy head boy at Sabeto District School this year.

A religious boy, Roger was known for leading family devotionals, showcasing his caring nature. His enthusiasm was evident even in simple activities, such as yard work with his father on New Year’s Eve.

This tragic incident occurred while the family was on a church picnic. Mr. Qoro relayed the specifics of Roger’s journey home, detailing how he followed friends to join the carrier transporting the picnic tent. Unbeknownst to Mr. Qoro, a call from his wife soon brought him harrowing news of his son’s accident.

Officer Livai Driu, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, expressed his condolences, emphasizing that despite ongoing road safety campaigns, accidents continue to arise due to driver negligence, underscoring the need for heightened awareness on the roads.

Roger’s body is currently at Sigatoka Hospital awaiting a post-mortem examination. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety measures, particularly during festive seasons.

This heart-wrenching story also celebrates the vibrant spirit of a young boy whose life, albeit brief, was filled with dreams and accomplishments. It brings to light the impact that a supportive community, family connections, and responsible driving can have on the lives of young ones. In honoring Roger’s dreams and potential, we are reminded of the importance of cherishing each moment and the responsibilities we hold for the safety of others.
