A tragic incident has resulted in the loss of a 16-year-old boy in Fiji, marking him as the latest casualty on the country’s roads. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana reported that the young driver was traveling on Korotari Road in Labasa around 1 a.m. when he reportedly lost control of his vehicle. The car veered off the road and struck a culvert.
Following the accident, the boy was taken to Labasa Hospital, where he received medical attention until he sadly passed away. SSP Divuana highlighted that the victim was driving without a valid driver’s license, which will be taken into consideration as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.
As of now, the road death toll in Fiji stands at 57, a decrease from 74 during the same period last year, indicating an overall trend toward improved road safety, although this recent tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with traffic accidents.
It’s crucial for young drivers to understand the importance of adhering to traffic laws and the potential consequences of driving without a license. Educating teenagers about road safety might contribute to preventing such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
