Tragic Loss Sparks Renewed Call for Road Safety in Fiji

A family in Vunicagi, Dreketi, is mourning the loss of their seven-year-old son, Krisnav Krisav Prasad, who died in a tragic hit-and-run accident on Tuesday. The incident occurred as Krisnav, a student at Dreketi Primary School, was crossing the Dreketi Highway near Basikalave Settlement when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a man in his 50s. His father, Tamlesh Prasad, described the event as “heartbreaking” and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his only child.

Tamlesh learned of his son’s death while at work and quickly rushed to the scene where he found his son’s lifeless body. According to reports, the boy died at the site of the incident, with a post-mortem examination confirming that injuries from the accident led to his death. The grieving father is now calling for a thorough investigation by the police to ensure accountability for the driver involved.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has responded to the incident by urging road users to exercise heightened caution, especially in school zones. LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa expressed condolences to the Prasad family, emphasizing the critical need for drivers to be vigilant and responsible on the roads. He noted the importance of slow speeds near schools and warned of intensified enforcement measures for traffic law violations.

This tragic occurrence has reignited discussions around road safety for children and vulnerable pedestrians in Fiji. Similar incidents in recent months have raised concerns about the dangers faced by young pedestrians. However, there are positive developments, as the national road death toll has seen a decrease this year compared to the last, suggesting that increased awareness and road safety initiatives may be having an effect.

In light of this devastating event, communities are encouraged to come together and reinforce road safety measures to protect the most vulnerable users. While the loss suffered by the Prasad family is immeasurable, there remains hope that through ongoing efforts and collaboration, such tragedies can be prevented in the future, fostering a safer environment for all.
