Two brothers are mourning the loss of their father, 70-year-old Hindu priest Annayalam Pillay, who tragically died in a road accident along the Nadi Back Road. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when Mr. Pillay was reportedly attempting to cross the street and was struck by a vehicle driven by a 43-year-old man.
Despite being rushed to Nadi Hospital, Mr. Pillay was pronounced dead upon arrival. His sons, who depended on him following their mother’s passing, described him as the cornerstone of their family. One son has an intellectual disability, while the other takes part in sugar cane harvesting in Sigatoka.
Subramani Pillay, one of the sons, expressed the profound impact of their father’s death, stating, “Life won’t be the same without him. He was everything to us.” The brothers are now seeking answers regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident, stating, “That driver took away our father’s life, and it hurts us so much.”
Authorities announced that the driver will be questioned as investigations into the accident proceed. The current national road death toll now stands at 35, slightly higher than the previous year’s count of 32 fatalities during the same period, emphasizing ongoing concerns regarding road safety.
This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety awareness and responsible driving practices. Communities are urged to remain vigilant to help prevent further tragedies and support families affected by such losses.
The investigation will hopefully provide clarity to the family so they can begin to find closure in the wake of this heartbreaking loss.
