Fijian featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider, formerly known as Nathan Singh, has tragically passed away at the young age of 25. The news comes shortly after he suffered serious head injuries during a fight against Australian-based Chinese boxer Runqi Zhou on October 26, where he experienced a TKO in the ninth round. The bout was part of the IBO Asia Pacific Featherweight title contest held under the South Pacific Boxing Promotions in Nadi.
Following the match, Haider was immediately rushed to Lautoka Hospital and later admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. His death was announced by his elder brother, fellow boxer Sebastian Singh, through a heartfelt social media post.
In expressing his grief, Singh shared a moving message: “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return,” reaffirming the deep bond and love he had for his brother, followed by, “R I P…. See you on the other side, love you my bro. You’ll always be remembered.”
Haider’s passing marks a significant loss for the boxing community in Fiji, as he was seen as a promising athlete with a bright future ahead of him. His courage and dedication to the sport will be remembered, and many hope that his legacy will inspire future generations of boxers in Fiji and beyond.
This tragic event serves as a poignant reminder of the risks inherent in professional sports. As the boxing community mourns, there is a hopeful message that Haider’s story will inspire increased safety measures and a deeper awareness of athlete well-being in the sport.
