On New Year’s Day, the life of 11-year-old Roger Qoro was tragically cut short when he was involved in a devastating accident involving a moving vehicle. Roger, a bright and active student from Sabeto District School, was reportedly thrown from the back of a carrier truck while traveling with other youths in Natadola.
The incident unfolded when the carrier truck hit a pothole, causing Roger to fall onto the road. Despite being rushed to Sigatoka Hospital for emergency treatment, he succumbed to his injuries.
Roger’s father, Roger Qoro Sr., expressed the deep sorrow his family feels following the loss of their son, who had dreams of becoming an aircraft engineer and representing his country in rugby. “He often said, ‘One day, you’ll see me on TV,’” his father recounted, reflecting on Roger’s determination and aspirations. Along with his athletic ambitions, Roger excelled academically, consistently ranking in the top two of his class from Year 1 to Year 6, and was expected to be appointed deputy head boy this year.
Known in his community as the “Nadi Golden Boy” for his talents and achievements, Roger was actively involved in both sports and his family’s spiritual life. He demonstrated leadership in family devotions and was always enthusiastic, as illustrated by his last moments spent cleaning the yard with his father on New Year’s Eve.
Mr. Qoro shared the harrowing details of how he learned of the accident, revealing the emotional weight of that fateful phone call when he found out about Roger’s passing. He described the heartbreak of his final conversation with his son, who had been joyfully playing with friends just before the tragedy.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, highlighted the broader issue of road safety, emphasizing that despite ongoing public safety campaigns and police presence, negligent driving continues to pose significant risks.
Roger’s body is currently at Sigatoka Hospital, awaiting a post-mortem examination as investigations continue into the circumstances of the accident.
While this story resonates with tragedy, it serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety for all. The memories of Roger’s ambitions and the joy he brought to those around him will endure in the hearts of his family and community.
In remembering young lives like Roger’s, it can inspire greater awareness and responsibility on the roads, reminding everyone of the cherished dreams that can be lost in an instant.
