On New Year’s Day, 11-year-old Roger Qoro’s life was tragically cut short when he was reportedly thrown from a moving vehicle in a devastating accident that has left his family in mourning. The promising young boy, who excelled in both academics and athletics, lost his life after being ejected from the back tray of a carrier truck near Natadola while traveling with friends.

According to police investigations, the incident occurred when the vehicle hit a pothole, causing Roger to fall onto the road. Despite being rushed to Sigatoka Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

Roger’s father, Roger Qoro Sr., shared his heartbreak, emphasizing his son’s ambitions of becoming an aircraft engineer and his dream of playing rugby for the national team. “He used to tell me, ‘One day, you’ll see me on TV,’” his father recalled, reflecting on the many dreams his son held.

Beyond sports, Roger was a commendable student who consistently ranked among the top in his class. He was anticipated to be appointed as the deputy head boy at Sabeto District School this year. His achievements in athletics included being a sprinter and a gold medallist in the 4x100m relay, as well as securing a silver medal in the Under-11 boys’ long jump.

While on a church picnic trip, Roger followed friends boarding the carrier, which was transporting equipment for the outing. His father, who was unaware of the unfolding tragedy while at work, described the moment he learned of the accident. In a poignant recollection, he shared that his last conversation with Roger on New Year’s Eve still resonates deeply with him.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, expressed his condolences over the unfortunate incident, reminding the public of the importance of road safety, especially during the festive season. He noted the ongoing issues with driver negligence despite continued safety advocacy.

Roger’s body is currently at Sigatoka Hospital, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

This tragic event is a solemn reminder of the fragility of life and the impact of road safety awareness. As communities grieve, thoughts and prayers go out to Roger Qoro’s family and friends during this painful time, hoping for healing and support as they navigate their loss.

To conclude, while this heartbreaking story highlights a devastating loss, it also calls for greater attention to road safety measures and community support systems to prevent such tragedies in the future.
