A tragic incident occurred in Labasa, where a 16-year-old teenager, Shalvin Lal, lost his life in a car accident on Monday. Shalvin was driving along Korotari Rd around 1 am when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle, leading it off the road and into a culvert. Unfortunately, he was not licensed to drive.

Following the accident, Shalvin was taken to the hospital and remained there until he succumbed to his injuries. The current road death toll in the area has reached 57, a decrease from 74 fatalities at this time last year.

Premila Devi, Shalvin’s guardian, expressed her heartbreak, describing him as a compassionate individual who often lent a helping hand to others. She shared that Shalvin was the youngest of three siblings and had been in her care since he was seven years old, after the passing of his father. Ms. Devi reflected on the precious memories of their last day together, noting their profound sense of loss and shock upon learning that he was driving the vehicle involved in the accident.

This heartbreaking story highlights the need for greater road safety awareness and the critical importance of responsible driving, especially among young individuals. Such tragedies serve as poignant reminders to the community about the potential consequences of driving without a license.

As we mourn the loss of a promising young life, it is also a call to action for families to engage in conversations about road safety and the responsibilities associated with driving. While the circumstances are unfortunate, this incident can inspire change and enhance awareness to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
