A tragic incident has claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy in Fiji, marking the latest road fatality in the country. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the young driver was traveling along Korotari Road in Labasa shortly after 1 a.m. when he reportedly lost control of his vehicle, leading it to crash into a culvert.

The boy was swiftly transported to Labasa Hospital, where he remained until he succumbed to his injuries. SSP Divuana noted that the victim was driving without a valid driver’s license, a fact that will be considered as part of the ongoing investigation into the crash.

Currently, the road death toll in Fiji stands at 57, which reflects a decrease compared to 74 fatalities during the same period last year.

This unfortunate event serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of road safety and the necessity for young individuals to adhere to driving laws, which are put in place to protect them and others. There may be hope in the fact that overall road fatalities have declined from the previous year, suggesting that increased awareness and safety measures might be having a positive impact, albeit not enough to prevent this heartbreaking incident.
