A tragic incident has led to the loss of a 16-year-old boy, marking the latest road fatality in Fiji. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the young driver was navigating Korotari Road in Labasa shortly after 1 a.m. yesterday when he reportedly lost control of his vehicle. The car veered off the road and collided with a culvert.

Following the accident, he was quickly transported to Labasa Hospital, where he remained under care until he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. SSP Divuana noted that the teenager was driving without a valid driver’s license, an aspect that will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

Despite this tragic event, it is noteworthy that the overall road death toll this year stands at 57, which is a reduction compared to 74 deaths during the same period last year. This indicates a potential positive trend in road safety in the region, suggesting that continued efforts to improve driving regulations and awareness may be having a beneficial effect.

It serves as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for responsible driving, especially among young and inexperienced drivers. Community awareness and education about the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of having a proper license could play a crucial role in preventing such tragedies in the future.
