The body of former Fiji 7s rugby player, Josaia Wini Raisuqe, arrived at Nadi International Airport today at 1:35 PM. The Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, led a delegation that included members of the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team and officials from the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) to receive Raisuqe’s remains.
Raisuqe, who tragically lost his life in a car accident in France earlier this month at the age of 30, will be transported to Suva for his final farewell, with preparations already underway. The FRU’s acting chief executive officer, Koli Sewabu, confirmed that a delegation from the union will attend the traditional reguregu tomorrow, followed by a funeral service on Friday.
Raisuqe’s untimely death has elicited widespread grief across the global rugby community. Known for his powerful runs and fierce defense, he made significant contributions to the sport, rising to prominence with the Fiji 7s team and later signing professional contracts in France with clubs such as Stade Français and Nevers. His playing style won him admiration and respect, and he notably represented Fiji in the 2024 Paris Olympics, helping secure a silver medal for his nation.
The outpouring of tributes from former teammates, fans, and rugby clubs reflects the affection and admiration Raisuqe garnered throughout his career. His passing is a profound loss to the rugby world, especially coming shortly after another young talent, Sekove Tagicakiverata, was also mourned following an unexpected death.
The collective mourning experienced by the rugby community highlights the strong bonds formed through the sport, illustrating the enduring impact and legacy left behind by athletes like Raisuqe. Despite the sadness of this loss, the spirit of camaraderie and support within the rugby fraternity shines through, ensuring that Raisuqe’s contributions to the sport will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
