A father is struggling to cope with the tragic loss of his only son, 22-year-old Ravneel Lal, who died in a car accident on Valley Road in Sigatoka on Sunday. Ravneel was one of four passengers in a vehicle that went off-road and flipped multiple times near Navula.
Rohit Lal, the victim’s father, recounted how his son had recently purchased a car and had attended a car show the day before the accident. That night, Ravneel returned home, parked his vehicle, and went out with two friends from Suva. They had planned to attend a soccer tournament in the upper valley the following day, but the trip ended in tragedy as they were returning home.
Rohit described his son as humble and hardworking, a sentiment that resonated deeply as he shared his heartbreak. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to Ravneel being ejected from the car. He sustained serious injuries, while the other passengers and the driver were taken to Sigatoka Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
As the investigation unfolds, SSP Divuana emphasized the importance of responsible driving and the need for a change in mindset among all road users. He warned that disregarding road safety advisories can result in accidents and urged everyone to take road safety seriously.
Currently, the national road death toll stands at 55, a notable reduction compared to 74 during the same period last year, highlighting the ongoing efforts to promote safer driving practices.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of vigilance on the roads. It is hoped that increased awareness and a shift in attitudes will help prevent future tragedies, allowing families to stay intact and promoting safer communities.
