Authorities have reported the tragic death of a 79-year-old woman in Rakiraki, who allegedly set herself on fire in her home on Monday. Neighbors discovered her collapsed amidst a burning pile of rubbish and quickly rushed her to the hospital. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the woman died from her injuries.
Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, highlighted a disturbing trend of elderly individuals facing loneliness and depression, especially as younger generations move away. She urged community networks and faith-based organizations to reach out to older residents who may lack support, fostering inclusivity and encouraging their active participation in society.
Kiran emphasized the collective responsibility in suicide prevention, encouraging individuals to assist those who may appear lonely. She disclosed that 16 elderly individuals had taken their lives from January to June of this year.
