The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging road users to remain vigilant and responsible in light of a tragic incident involving the death of a 12-year-old student from Sabeto, Nadi. The student reportedly fell from a moving vehicle when it hit potholes, leading to his unfortunate demise.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa expressed that this loss of life was preventable and underscored the importance of adhering to road safety guidelines. He called on drivers to maintain heightened awareness and practice responsible driving behavior, especially while navigating difficult road conditions like potholes.

Rokosawa stressed the crucial role that safe driving plays in ensuring passenger safety, stating that drivers must minimize speed and drive cautiously over uneven surfaces. He highlighted the importance of not overloading vehicles and ensuring that all passengers are seated securely.

The LTA CEO emphasized the need for drivers to understand they lose control of their vehicles the faster they drive, particularly on rough or unfamiliar roads. He reminded all drivers that adhering to safety regulations is not optional, and that reckless driving can lead to life-changing consequences.

Moreover, he pointed out that passengers also share a responsibility for their safety. Passengers should not engage in or encourage unsafe practices, such as riding in hazardous areas of the vehicle or distracting the driver. A collective commitment to road safety from both drivers and passengers is vital for ensuring safe travel.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of road safety awareness. By fostering a culture of caution and responsibility on the roads, communities can work toward preventing further tragedies.

In summary, the LTA’s call to action emphasizes that road safety is a shared responsibility, capable of saving lives and ensuring the wellbeing of all road users. With greater awareness and adherence to safety measures, we can hope for a future with safer roads for everyone.
