Tomasi Waimuka experienced a tragic loss on Saturday morning when he learned that his son, Aporosa Momo, was a victim of a hit-and-run accident on Drasa Avenue in Lautoka. Momo, 26, was discovered by a passerby who quickly took him to Lautoka Hospital, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mr. Waimuka, a resident of Nasowata Settlement in Navutu, Lautoka, stated that their family had just returned from a funeral the night before. He recalled that his son mentioned plans to visit relatives later that evening. A few hours later, Mr. Waimuka was awakened by a knock on his door, where two nephews delivered the devastating news about Momo’s involvement in the accident. Mr. Waimuka expressed his hope that his son would only sustain minor injuries, not foreseeing the tragic outcome.

Upon arrival at the scene, he was devastated to find his son’s body covered and could not approach it as police had cordoned off the area. Momo is survived by two young children, which Mr. Waimuka highlighted as a source of great sorrow for their family.

Reflecting on his son’s life, Mr. Waimuka shared that Momo was known for his contributions to their community, always willing to help during local events. Momo was also involved in a rugby league team in Lautoka, further highlighting the impact of his loss on both his family and the community.

In a related incident, another road accident occurred in which Nadi businessman Ronesh Chand, 38, tragically lost his life after losing control of his vehicle. Chand was driving with three passengers, and while they were all taken to Lautoka Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries, although two passengers were reported to be in stable condition and one was discharged.

The current road death toll stands at 50, a slight decrease compared to 71 during the same period last year, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, who confirmed that traffic investigations are ongoing.

This heartbreaking series of events serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety. It highlights the need for continued awareness and preventative measures to reduce tragic incidents on the roads.

While the losses are profound, remembering the positive impacts that Aporosa Momo and Ronesh Chand made in their communities may help bring some comfort to their families. Their legacies can inspire others to cherish life and foster supportive communities that celebrate the contributions of individuals.
