Tomasi Waimuka’s heartache unfolded early Saturday morning as he was faced with the devastating news that his son, Aporosa Momo, had become a victim of a hit-and-run incident on Drasa Avenue in Lautoka. Momo, aged 26, was discovered by a passerby who promptly rushed him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.
Waimuka, who resides in Nasowata Settlement, recounted the last moments he spent with his son, explaining that they had just returned from a funeral the previous day. Momo had informed him of his plans to visit a relative later that evening. The tragic news came as a shock to Waimuka, who had hoped for minor injuries rather than the loss of his son.
Upon arriving at the scene, he was devastated to find his son’s body covered, with police preventing family members from approaching. Momo leaves behind two young children, amplifying the deep sorrow the family is experiencing. Mr. Waimuka reminisced about his son’s contributions to the community, noting how he was always eager to lend a hand at local events and played for a rugby league team in Lautoka.
Additionally, Senior Superintendant of Police Mitieli Divuana revealed that traffic investigators have begun looking into the circumstances surrounding Momo’s death. In a related incident, another road accident occurred shortly after midnight on Friday, resulting in the death of 38-year-old Nadi businessman Ronesh Chand. Allegedly, Chand lost control of his vehicle along Barara Flat while driving with three passengers. While two passengers have sustained stable injuries, the third has since been discharged.
SSP Divuana also noted that the road death toll for this year currently stands at 50, a slight decrease from the 71 fatalities recorded during the same period last year.
This tragic set of events serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the far-reaching impacts of such accidents on families and communities. The hope remains that, through increased awareness and stringent traffic laws, similar incidents can be reduced, offering solace to those mourning and ensuring safer roads for everyone.
