Liam Payne’s tragic death has been officially attributed to “polytrauma,” following an inquest held in the UK. The beloved former One Direction member passed away at the age of 31 in October after falling from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
During the inquest, which took place on December 17, Senior Coroner Crispin Butler stated that further investigations are needed to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Payne’s fall. He emphasized the potential for delays in gathering crucial information through the channels of the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.
The inquest will resume on November 6 for a pre-inquest review. There is a sense of hope among Payne’s family, as they feel a semblance of justice may be achievable following the charging of five individuals related to the incident. A family friend expressed that, despite a challenging holiday season, they now have a glimmer of hope for justice for their son.
Charges of negligent homicide have been filed against Payne’s manager, the manager of the Casa Sur Hotel, and its head of reception, all of whom could face up to five years in prison if found guilty. Additionally, a hotel worker and a local waiter have been charged with supplying drugs, potentially facing 15 years in prison.
Judge Laura Bruniard recounted the moments leading up to the tragedy, noting that Payne attempted to climb over his balcony after exhibiting signs of being unable to care for himself due to intoxication. The judge criticized the decision to take him back to his room rather than seeking medical help, stating that he should have been kept in a safe environment until professional assistance arrived.
The circumstances surrounding Liam Payne’s death are deeply tragic, yet the legal proceedings may bring some sense of closure and accountability for his loved ones. While the investigations continue, there’s a collective hope that justice will prevail, honoring the memory of the talented musician.
