Two tragic accidents were reported in the Western Division yesterday morning, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana outlined that both incidents took place in Lautoka during the early hours. The first accident occurred shortly after midnight, claiming the life of a 38-year-old man. It is believed that the driver lost control of his vehicle while traveling along Barara Flat towards Nadi, causing it to veer off the road. Although the victim and three passengers were quickly transported to Lautoka Hospital, he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Two of the passengers remain hospitalized in stable condition, while the third has been discharged.

The second incident, suspected to be a hit-and-run, occurred around 3 a.m. on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby and also taken to Lautoka Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana confirmed that traffic investigators are actively working to identify the vehicle involved in this incident.

Further complicating the morning’s events, a serious accident took place in Wailada, Lami, where a 22-year-old sustained severe injuries after colliding with a parked truck’s trailer. Police promptly ferried the victim to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical care.

Notably, SSP Divuana stated that the current road death toll stands at 50, a significant decrease compared to 71 fatalities during the same period last year, indicating ongoing efforts to improve road safety awareness.

As investigations into all incidents continue, this grim reminder of the importance of cautious driving offers a hopeful note: the drop in fatalities compared to previous years suggests that measures and campaigns focusing on road safety might be having a positive impact on the community. It emphasizes the ongoing need for collaboration among drivers to ensure safer roads for everyone.
