Two tragic incidents resulting in fatalities were reported in the Western Division yesterday morning. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana revealed that both accidents occurred in Lautoka during the early hours.
The first incident took place shortly after midnight, claiming the life of a 38-year-old man. It is alleged that while driving along Barara Flat toward Nadi, he lost control of his vehicle, causing it to veer off the road. The man and three passengers were rushed to Lautoka Hospital, where he sadly passed away. Two of the passengers are currently stable in the hospital, while the third has been discharged.
In the second incident, believed to be a hit-and-run, a 26-year-old man was discovered along Drasa Avenue after 3 a.m. by a passerby, who immediately took him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana stated that traffic investigators are actively working to identify the vehicle involved in this incident.
Additionally, another serious accident was reported in Wailada, Lami, where a 22-year-old man sustained serious injuries after crashing into a parked truck’s trailer. He was taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he remains hospitalized.
Despite the unfortunate news, there is a glimmer of hope as SSP Divuana noted that the current road death toll stands at 50, a reduction from 71 at the same time last year. This reduction may indicate ongoing efforts to improve road safety and awareness among drivers.
As investigations continue into these incidents, it is crucial for all road users to prioritize safety and make responsible choices while driving to prevent further tragedies.
