There were two tragic accidents reported in the Western Division yesterday morning, resulting in the loss of two lives. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana shared that both incidents took place in Lautoka during the early hours.
The first incident occurred just after midnight, claiming the life of a 38-year-old man. It is reported that while driving on Barara Flat en route to Nadi, the driver lost control of his vehicle, which veered off the road. Alongside him were three passengers who were quickly rushed to Lautoka Hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, the driver succumbed to his injuries, though two passengers remain hospitalized in stable condition, while the third has since been discharged.
Hours later, around 3 AM, a second accident took place along Drasa Avenue, believed to be a hit-and-run. A passerby discovered a 26-year-old man who had been struck and rushed him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana confirmed that traffic investigators are actively gathering information regarding the vehicle associated with this incident.
Moreover, an unrelated serious incident was reported in Wailada, Lami, where a 22-year-old man suffered significant injuries after crashing into a parked truck’s trailer. He is currently hospitalized at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
In a notable contrast, SSP Divuana reported that the current road death toll stands at 50, a decrease from 71 at the same time last year. This statistic suggests a potential positive trend in road safety awareness.
While these accidents are heartbreaking reminders of the dangers on the road, the ongoing investigations aim to shed light on the circumstances that led to these incidents. There is hope that through increased public awareness and preventive measures, further tragedies can be avoided in the future.
