Two tragic accidents occurred in the Western Division yesterday morning, resulting in the loss of two lives. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, both incidents took place in Lautoka during the early hours.
The first accident happened shortly after midnight when a 38-year-old man reportedly lost control of his vehicle while driving along Barara Flat towards Nadi. The car veered off the road, leading to the man and three other passengers being rushed to Lautoka Hospital. Unfortunately, the 38-year-old later succumbed to his injuries. Two passengers remain in stable condition, while the third has been discharged.
The second accident, believed to be a hit-and-run, occurred around 3 a.m. on Drasa Avenue. A passerby discovered a 26-year-old man who had been struck and immediately transported him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana mentioned that traffic investigators are actively working to gather information about the vehicle involved in this incident.
Additionally, in a separate accident in Wailada, Lami, a 22-year-old man sustained serious injuries when his vehicle collided with the trailer of a parked truck. He was taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital for treatment and remains hospitalized.
SSP Divuana noted that the current road death toll stands at 50, a decrease from 71 during the same period last year, indicating ongoing efforts to improve road safety.
As investigations into these incidents continue, authorities urge the community to remain vigilant and prioritize safe driving practices. In a challenging situation, it’s hopeful to note that awareness and preventive measures can lead to a decline in road-related fatalities in the future.
