Two tragic accidents occurred in the Western Division early yesterday morning, resulting in the loss of two lives. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana reported that both incidents transpired in Lautoka.

The first accident took place shortly after midnight when a 38-year-old man, driving on Barara flat towards Nadi, lost control of his vehicle. The car veered off the road, leading to serious consequences. Emergency services rushed the driver and three passengers to Lautoka Hospital, but the driver succumbed to his injuries. Of the passengers, two remain hospitalized but are in stable condition, while the third has already been discharged.

In the second incident, happening around 3 AM along Drasa Avenue, a 26-year-old man was found lying by the roadside by a passerby. Unfortunately, despite prompt transportation to Lautoka Hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Investigators are actively looking into this hit-and-run case to determine the vehicle involved.

Additionally, a serious accident in Wailada, Lami, involved a 22-year-old who crashed into a trailer of a stationary truck. He suffered significant injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

SSP Divuana noted that the current road death toll stands at 50, which is a notable decrease compared to 71 fatalities during the same period last year, indicating progress in road safety efforts.

While these incidents are deeply saddening, they also serve as a crucial reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance while driving. Continued efforts from law enforcement and community awareness can ideally reduce future tragedies on the roads.

In summary, as investigations into these accidents proceed, the community is encouraged to remain cautious and prioritize safe driving practices to prevent further loss of life.
