Two tragic accidents occurred in the Western Division yesterday morning, resulting in the loss of two lives. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana reported that both incidents took place in Lautoka.
The first collision happened shortly after midnight. A 38-year-old man, while driving towards Nadi along Barara flat, reportedly lost control of his vehicle, causing it to leave the roadway. The man and three other passengers were quickly transported to Lautoka Hospital, but he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Two of the passengers remain hospitalized but are in stable condition, while the third has been discharged.
The second accident, suspected to be a hit-and-run, occurred after 3 AM on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was found by a passerby, who promptly took him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana indicated that traffic investigators are currently working to identify the vehicle involved in this incident.
Additionally, a serious accident was recorded in Wailada, Lami, where a 22-year-old driver suffered significant injuries after colliding with a parked truck’s trailer. He was transported to Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he remains under care.
SSP Divuana noted that the current road death toll stands at 50, a decrease from 71 at the same time last year, indicating some progress in road safety efforts.
This report highlights the ongoing issues surrounding road safety and the importance of responsible driving. While these incidents are deeply saddening, the reduction in road fatalities compared to last year gives a glimmer of hope for continued improvements in community awareness and safety measures in the future.
