A tragic incident has occurred in Fiji, marking the loss of a 16-year-old boy in a road accident. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the accident took place around 1 a.m. on Korotari Road in Labasa. It is reported that the young driver lost control of his vehicle, which then veered off the road and collided with a culvert.

Following the accident, the victim was urgently transported to Labasa Hospital, where he remained until he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. SSP Divuana pointed out that the boy was driving without a valid driver’s license, an aspect that will be scrutinized in the ongoing investigation.

So far this year, the road death toll in Fiji stands at 57, significantly lower than the 74 fatalities recorded during the same period last year. This indicates a potential positive trend towards improved road safety awareness, but the latest incident serves as a poignant reminder of the need for vigilance and adherence to driving regulations.

In light of this tragedy, it is vital for communities to engage in discussions about safe driving practices and the importance of adhering to legal requirements for drivers of all ages. This could help prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure the safety of all road users.
