Two tragic fatal accidents were reported yesterday morning in the Western Division. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, both incidents took place in Lautoka during the early hours.
The first accident, which occurred shortly after midnight, resulted in the death of a 38-year-old man. It is alleged that the victim, while driving towards Nadi along Barara Flat, lost control of his vehicle, causing it to veer off the road. He and three other passengers were immediately taken to Lautoka Hospital, where the man later succumbed to his injuries. Two of the passengers remain hospitalized but are in stable condition, while the third has been discharged.
The second accident, described as a hit-and-run, took place after 3 a.m. on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby and rushed to Lautoka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana stated that traffic investigators are currently looking into this case to identify the vehicle involved.
Additionally, in a serious accident early this morning in Wailada, Lami, a 22-year-old sustained serious injuries after colliding with a trailer of a parked truck. He was transported to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital for treatment and remains hospitalized.
As of now, the road death toll stands at 50, a significant decrease from 71 fatalities recorded during the same period last year. This reflects ongoing efforts towards enhancing road safety and awareness in the region.
While these incidents are disheartening, they also serve as a reminder of the importance of road safety and caution while driving. Communities can work together to support safer driving practices to prevent such tragedies in the future.
