A tragic incident involving the drowning of a Japanese tourist at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka on November 4 has escalated into an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) matter. According to Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, the unfortunate event took place while the tourist was swimming alone.

In light of this incident, the National OHS Service (NOHSS) has initiated a thorough investigation to assess whether the resort had effective systems and procedures in place for guest activities. This investigation will focus on the level of supervision provided during events and evaluate the rescue and evacuation protocols for both guests and staff in emergencies.

Minister Singh has emphasized that the National OHS Service is collaborating with appropriate authorities to secure medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force to aid in the investigation. He stressed the need for the hotel management to identify potential hazards and establish appropriate control measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. A comprehensive report will be released once the investigation concludes.

This incident has sparked a broader conversation about safety in tourism and resort management. It underscores the importance of stringent safety measures and protocols in hospitality settings, particularly as tourism continues to be a vital sector for many economies.

In the wake of this tragedy, there is hope that the investigation will lead to improved safety standards in resorts, ensuring a safer environment for all guests and staff moving forward. The commitment to addressing these safety concerns can foster a more secure experience for future visitors to Fiji.
