The National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS), part of the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations (MEPWR), is actively investigating the tragic drowning of a hotel guest at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka. The incident, which involved a 50-year-old Japanese tourist, occurred on November 4, 2024, at approximately 8:00 AM while he was swimming alone near the resort.
Minister Agni Deo Singh reported that preliminary findings indicate the tourist drowned during his swim. In response, the NOHSS is undertaking further investigations to ensure that the hotel has adequate safety measures and procedures in place for the activities of its guests. This includes reviewing how events are supervised and assessing the rescue and evacuation protocols established for guests and staff in emergency situations.
Additionally, the National OHS Service is collaborating with the Fiji Police Force to acquire medical and autopsy reports that will aid in their inquiries. Singh emphasized the hotel’s responsibility to identify potential hazards and implement strategies to prevent similar occurrences in the future. A comprehensive report will be prepared once the investigation concludes.
The NOHSS routinely conducts inspections across all workplaces, including resorts, in Fiji to confirm compliance with the legal safety standards. During these inspections, they can issue enforcement notices for any violations found, ensuring that businesses take necessary corrective actions.
This unfortunate incident underlines the importance of stringent safety protocols in the hospitality industry. It serves as a reminder that continuous monitoring and improvement of safety measures can protect guests and enhance their experience in stunning destinations like Fiji. While this tragic event is heartbreaking, it presents an opportunity for the resort and others in the industry to reassess and strengthen safety measures, ultimately fostering a safer environment for all visitors.
