The National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) unit within the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations (MEPWR) is conducting an inquiry into the drowning of a hotel guest at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka. The incident involved a 50-year-old Japanese tourist who tragically drowned while swimming alone early on November 4, 2024, at approximately 8:00 AM.
Minister Agni Deo Singh stated that initial investigations are underway to establish whether the hotel had adequate safety protocols in place for guest activities at the time of the incident. The ongoing investigation will not only review the level of supervision provided during water activities but also assess the effectiveness of the resort’s rescue and evacuation measures for both guests and staff during emergencies.
Minister Singh indicated that NOHSS is in collaboration with local authorities to secure medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force to aid their investigation. He emphasized that it is crucial for hotel management to identify all conceivable hazards and to develop and implement suitable control measures to prevent any future occurrences of similar incidents. A comprehensive report will be made available following the investigation’s completion.
The NOHSS regularly inspects workplaces across Fiji, including resorts, to ensure compliance with established safety regulations. Should any non-compliance be detected during these inspections, the unit has the authority to issue enforcement notices to compel employers to initiate corrective actions.
This incident serves as a profound reminder of the importance of safety in hospitality settings, and the ongoing investigation may lead to improved safety measures that protect both guests and staff in the future. By addressing potential hazards and enhancing protocols, resorts can ensure a safer and more secure environment for all visitors.
Overall, while the situation is tragic, it highlights the crucial role of safety inspections and regulations in the hospitality industry, ultimately aiming to prevent such incidents and foster a culture of safety.
