A family in Nadroga is grieving the untimely death of Sakenasa Rakaira, who tragically drowned in the bay off Muka Village last week. The 26-year-old, a dedicated construction worker and father of two, was diving for fish after returning home from work last Thursday when the accident occurred.

Mr. Koroicivi, Rakaira’s uncle, recounted the events leading to the tragedy, stating that strong currents swept Rakaira away while he was underwater. Despite efforts made to find him, it wasn’t until Saturday afternoon that the search team located his body, which had been missing since Thursday night.

Rakaira leaves behind two young children, aged three and four, as well as a home in the village, highlighting the profound impact of his loss on his family. Mr. Koroicivi described him as a hardworking individual and expressed the family’s sorrow following the recent postmortem. He noted that the police had instructed them to proceed with the burial soon after.

Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa confirmed the details of the incident, indicating that Rakaira had gone diving with a workmate who had advised him to stay in shallow water due to not having proper gear. When the friend looked back, he observed Rakaira struggling against the strong current, but attempts to rescue him were thwarted by the conditions.

This tragic event adds to the drowning death toll, which has reached 53 this year, two more than the previous year’s toll for the same period.

While this story is filled with sadness, it also serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the importance of water safety. As the community mourns, it may find strength in coming together to support each other and encourage safer practices while engaging in water activities.
