The National Occupational Health and Safety Services, part of the Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations Ministry, is currently conducting an investigation into the drowning of a 50-year-old Japanese tourist at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka, which occurred on November 4 around 8:00 AM while the tourist was swimming alone.
Initial findings suggest the necessity of reviewing the resort’s safety systems and procedures related to guest activities, particularly involving supervision and protocols for rescue and evacuation. The investigation is being strengthened through collaboration with the Fiji Police Force to acquire medical and autopsy reports necessary for a thorough inquiry.
Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh highlighted the importance of the resort management’s responsibility in identifying potential hazards and implementing effective control strategies to avert future incidents. He assured that a comprehensive report would be made available once the investigation concludes.
The National Occupational Health and Safety Services also conducts regular inspections of various workplaces, including resorts, ensuring adherence to safety regulations and issuing enforcement notices for any identified violations.
It’s encouraging to see authorities taking proactive steps to improve safety in tourism-related establishments, reflecting a commitment to protecting both guests and staff. This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of safety protocols, particularly in areas frequented by visitors. Continuous vigilance and improved safety measures can help enhance the overall experience and well-being of tourists in Fiji.
