The National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS), part of the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations (MEPWR), is currently looking into a tragic drowning incident involving a hotel guest at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka.
According to Minister Agni Deo Singh, preliminary findings indicate that a 50-year-old Japanese tourist drowned while swimming alone at approximately 8:00 AM on November 4, 2024. In light of this unfortunate event, the NOHSS is working to determine whether the hotel had adequate safety measures and supervision in place for its guests’ activities.
The investigation will focus on the supervision levels provided during swimming and the effectiveness of rescue and emergency protocols for both guests and staff. Singh noted that the NOHSS is collaborating with relevant authorities to secure medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force to aid in its ongoing investigation.
The minister emphasized the accountability of hotel management, urging them to identify potential hazards and to implement strategies aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. A comprehensive report will be released upon completion of the investigation.
The NOHSS regularly inspects workplaces throughout Fiji, including resorts, to ensure compliance with legal safety standards. During these inspections, they issue enforcement notices for any non-compliance, ensuring that necessary corrective actions are taken by employers.
This incident highlights the importance of safety protocols in recreational settings and serves as a reminder for all establishments to prioritize the well-being of their guests. Ensuring a safe environment can prevent tragic occurrences and promote a secure experience for vacationers at resorts.
In summary, as investigations unfold, it is hoped that vital lessons will emerge, leading to improved safety measures that protect guests at hotels and resorts across Fiji.
