The National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS), part of the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations (MEPWR), is looking into a tragic drowning incident involving a guest at the Fiji Hideaway Resort located in Sigatoka. The incident involved a 50-year-old Japanese tourist who drowned while swimming at approximately 8:00 AM on November 4, 2024.

Minister Agni Deo Singh noted that the initial investigations indicate the tourist was swimming alone at the time of the accident. NOHSS is currently conducting a thorough investigation to assess whether the hotel had the necessary systems and procedures in place to ensure guest safety during such activities. This inquiry will focus on the level of supervision provided, as well as the protocols the resort has for rescue and evacuation during emergencies.

In an effort to aid the investigation, the NOHSS is collaborating with relevant authorities to secure medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force. Singh emphasized that the hotel management must proactively identify potential hazards and put control strategies in place to prevent similar incidents in the future. A comprehensive report detailing findings from the investigation will be made available at its conclusion.

The National OHS Services routinely inspects workplaces across Fiji, including resorts, to confirm compliance with legal safety requirements. They also issue enforcement notices for any instances of non-compliance discovered during inspections, which compel employers to take necessary corrective actions.

This incident underscores the importance of safety measures in hospitality settings, particularly in activities involving water. As the investigation unfolds, it holds the potential to enhance safety standards at resorts, ultimately benefiting all guests who visit Fiji in the future. The hope is that by identifying and addressing safety gaps, the industry can create a safer environment for both tourists and staff, ensuring such tragedies do not occur again.
