Minister Agni Deo Singh confirmed that a 50-year-old Japanese tourist was swimming alone when the unfortunate event took place on November 4, 2024, around 8:00 am. The preliminary investigation indicates the necessity for a thorough evaluation of the resort’s safety protocols.
NOHSS is delving into the adequacy of the hotel’s systems and procedures for guest activities, investigating factors like supervision levels and the effectiveness of rescue and evacuation protocols during emergencies. Singh further noted that the National OHS Service is collaborating with appropriate authorities to acquire medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force, which will aid in their inquiry.
Additionally, it is imperative for the hotel management to recognize potential hazards and implement effective control measures to avert such incidents in the future. The comprehensive report will be revealed upon the completion of the investigation.
The NOHSS is committed to conducting inspections in all Fijian workplaces, including resorts, to ensure compliance with legal safety standards. They also issue enforcement notices for any violations detected, ensuring that employers take necessary corrective actions.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures in the hospitality industry. It highlights the commitment of the authorities to improve workplace safety and prevent future tragedies. Through thorough investigations and the implementation of robust safety protocols, there is a hopeful outlook for enhancing safety standards, ensuring that visitors can enjoy Fiji’s beautiful resorts with peace of mind.
