The National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) unit, part of the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations (MEPWR), is actively investigating a tragic drowning incident involving a hotel guest at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka. The unfortunate event occurred on November 4, 2024, when a 50-year-old Japanese tourist drowned while swimming alone near the resort around 8:00 AM.

Minister Agni Deo Singh emphasized that initial investigations indicated the tourist was swimming without supervision at the time of the incident. As part of the ongoing investigation, NOHSS is closely examining the hotel’s systems and procedures concerning guest activities. This includes assessing the level of supervision provided during swimming and other activities, as well as the adequacy of rescue and evacuation protocols in case of emergencies.

Minister Singh stated that the National OHS Service is collaborating with relevant authorities, including the Fiji Police Force, to collect medical and autopsy reports, which will aid in the investigation process. He underscored the hotel’s responsibility to identify potential hazards and implement effective control measures to prevent such incidents from recurring. The findings from the investigation will be compiled into a full report once all inquiries are completed.

The NOHSS conducts regular inspections of all workplaces in Fiji, including resorts, to ensure compliance with safety regulations. The unit has the authority to issue enforcement notices for any non-compliance detected during these inspections, compelling employers to take corrective actions.

This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of safety measures in the hospitality industry, particularly concerning guest activities. Ensuring the safety of guests not only protects them but also upholds the reputation of resorts and fosters a secure environment for all visitors.

In a hopeful light, this investigation could lead to heightened safety protocols and improved supervision practices across resorts in Fiji, ultimately enhancing the safety and experience for future guests.
