The National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) of the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations (MEPWR) is currently probing a drowning incident involving a hotel guest at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka.

Minister Agni Deo Singh reported that initial findings indicate that a 50-year-old Japanese tourist drowned while swimming alone at approximately 8:00 am on November 4, 2024. The investigation aims to clarify whether the hotel maintained adequate systems and procedures for guest activities.

As part of their inquiry, NOHSS will assess the level of supervision for such activities and the adequacy of rescue and evacuation procedures for both guests and staff in emergencies. The National OHS Service is collaborating with relevant authorities to acquire medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force, which will aid in their investigation.

Minister Singh emphasized the importance of hotel management in identifying potential hazards and implementing effective control strategies to prevent future incidents. A comprehensive report will be created once the investigation concludes.

The NOHSS routinely inspects various workplaces across Fiji, including resorts, to ensure compliance with legal safety requirements. They also issue enforcement notices to address any violations encountered during these inspections, promoting a safer environment for all.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of safety measures in tourist accommodations. It highlights the proactive steps taken by authorities to safeguard guests and ensure that corrective actions are implemented to enhance overall safety protocols. By addressing these issues, the hope is that similar tragedies can be prevented in the future, allowing both tourists and locals to enjoy Fiji’s beautiful resorts safely.
