Three children in Suva made a tragic discovery when they found the body of a newborn baby girl abandoned in a creek. This incident occurred around 8:30 AM behind the Wailada Industrial Subdivision in Lami, as reported by The Fiji Times.

The youngsters, identified as Niko Verekauta, 10, Kini Murimurivalu, 8, and Peni Verekauta, 12, initially mistook the baby for a doll. Upon realizing that the infant was alive yet unresponsive and shivering, they rushed to get help from nearby adults. Sadly, by the time they returned with assistance, the newborn had already succumbed to her condition.

The baby was discovered wrapped in a pair of red trousers and a white shirt, with blood still present on her body. Nearby, the placenta was found discarded, roughly half a meter from where the baby lay. Local villagers quickly alerted security personnel at a nearby terminal, who then contacted the authorities.

According to police, the baby appeared to have been full-term and had likely been abandoned shortly after birth. Authorities are currently working to locate the mother, who may require medical assistance following the delivery. While they do not rule out the possibility of pressing charges, the focus remains on identifying her.

This heart-wrenching incident underscores broader concerns about child welfare and community responsibility. Similar cases of abandoned infants in recent times highlight the urgent need for improved awareness, support systems, and vigilance to protect vulnerable individuals.

In light of such tragedies, there is hope that the community can come together to foster an environment that prioritizes the safety and well-being of children, ultimately preventing further occurrences of such heartbreaking situations.
