A 35-year-old man, Sairusi Ceinaturaga, has been denied bail in connection with the tragic death of his one-year-old son. This ruling was delivered by High Court Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull. Ceinaturaga faces serious charges of murder and assault, which he allegedly committed at the Vunidawa settlement in Cunningham, Suva, on October 17 of the previous year.
Earlier this year, Ceinaturaga pleaded guilty to striking his 27-year-old partner while she was preparing a meal. However, he has denied allegations of causing harm to his son, which include hitting the child with an aluminum cooking spoon, slamming his face against a wall, and subsequently throwing him onto a mattress. Ceinaturaga, who sought bail to support his three children from a previous relationship, is fighting against serious claims backed by testimonies from his partner and stepson, emphasizing a history of daily physical and verbal abuse in the household.
Justice Bull referenced testimonies detailing this history, highlighting that the defacto partner indicated a long-standing pattern of abuse. The stepson also claimed that Ceinaturaga not only attacked his deceased brother but also threatened him during previous incidents. Additional statements from neighbors echoed concerns regarding Ceinaturaga’s treatment of the children, describing instances of verbal abuse.
The case has raised significant alarm about domestic violence and the safety of children within families, reinforcing the importance of community vigilance and support for victims of abuse. The court has set a new hearing date for June 20, where the legal proceedings will continue. As the system addresses these grave allegations, there is hope that it will foster a greater commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals and ensuring justice for those affected by domestic violence.
