A post-mortem examination was conducted on Thursday for Marika Radua, a farmer from Naviavia Village in Cakaudrove, who tragically died on Tuesday while in custody at the Savusavu Police Station. His death followed an alleged assault by another inmate within the police cell block.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander for the North, has confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Radua’s death. “Once CID officers complete their work, we will issue another statement,” SSP Baledrokadroka stated.

An initial report from the Fiji Police Force indicated that the Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, had instructed CID personnel to look into the incident. According to the police statement, officers transported Radua to Savusavu Hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Residents from Naviavia Village, including advisory councillor Marika Sade, reported that Radua was arrested early Tuesday morning after he allegedly set a family home on fire around 3 AM. Sade expressed concern for Radua’s mother, who is currently in distress after losing both her home and her son within the same week. She is now residing with relatives outside the village for support.

This situation highlights the urgent need for thorough investigations and support systems for families affected by tragic events. Law enforcement’s commitment to transparency in this investigation can provide some reassurance to the community as they seek answers during this difficult time.

The community’s resilience and ability to gather support during such crises can foster healing and understanding in the aftermath of tragedy.
