A post-mortem examination was carried out on Thursday for Marika Radua, a farmer from Naviavia Village in Cakaudrove, who passed away on Tuesday while allegedly in custody at the Savusavu Police Station. Reports indicate that Radua died after an incident involving another prisoner in the cell block.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Radua’s death. “Once CID officers complete their investigation, we will provide further updates,” stated DPC Baledrokadroka.
The Fiji Police Force’s initial statement confirmed that Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew directed CID Headquarters to investigate the case. Following the incident, police personnel transported Radua to Savusavu Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.
Marika Sade, an advisory councillor from Naviavia Village, detailed that Radua was arrested early Tuesday morning after allegedly setting a family home ablaze around 3 a.m. Commenting on the tragic circumstances, Sade noted that Radua’s mother is currently experiencing extreme distress, having lost both her home and her son in the same week. She is temporarily staying with a relative away from their village.
This situation highlights the pressing issues of mental health and support within communities, especially following traumatic events. As the investigation unfolds, it is hoped that it will bring clarity and possibly prevent such tragedies in the future.
In summary, the death of Marika Radua has opened up discussions regarding the treatment of individuals in custody and the need for adequate mental health resources for families facing trauma. The ongoing investigation by the CID is a crucial step towards ensuring accountability and fostering community healing.
